1967 Shelby GT500

  by Patty Henderson

In 1967, Ford pumped up the Mustang with a 390 cid (6.4 litre) power brute of an engine, boasting 320 hp. Not to be outdone, Shelby outgunned that with the new Shelby Mustang GT500, showing off Ford’s new 428 cid V8, producing a whopping 400 hp! Those buyers fearful of outrageous insurance costs for such a street racer masquerading as just another Mustang got a break because Ford got sneaky and advertised only 355 hp. It was an all out Muscle Car street war and you didn’t want to meet this frightening Snake in your rear view mirror.

GMP has captured the powerful 428 V8 beastie in amazing 1/24 and popped it into a stunning 1/24 model that will run circles (leaving fiery tread marks) around all the other Muscle Cars in your collection! From the rich, glistening, icy-hot Brittany Blue paint, your eyes will notice the attention paid to every detail on this model. It’s a powerful image. GMP has achieved a perfect balance with the model. The model isn’t too heavy or too light. It feels right in your hand. As with all GMP Muscle Cars, the stance and height is spot on. This Snake looks like it’s ready to pounce on the next unsuspecting Mopar and swallow it whole! Take a peek inside and you’ll see how committed to excellence GMP is with their research and detail.

The interior is racy with the roll bar and the fabric seatbelts. The wood grain steering is an outstanding replication. And the real treat is the folding seat back! GMP provides one of those nifty opening tools and you’ll need to use it to peel down the rear seat. What a treat! The dash is so detailed and the seats so realistic, you’ll swear you’re holding a real 1:1 in your hand. Oh, and the usual GMP treat of amazing rubber floor mats. These will make your eyes pop out. It’s the tiny details that make a model and a model manufacturer extra special. And no dog legs here. In the trunk you will find the usual, correct trunk lining, spare tire and more detail.

And then there’s that fire breathing 428! What an amazing piece of art GMP has created with the Shelby 500GT 428 V8. Take a look at the picture. It makes your heart race. You can almost hear this thing fire up and roar! No, this isn’t the real thing, this is GMP’s perfectly scaled rendition of one the most powerful engines in Muscle Car history. You might want to change the oil on this one, but you don’t need to. Just enjoy.

GMP has included a nice, B&W fold up brochure with each model explaining, in depth, each feature and detail.

If you collect Muscle Cars, this one has to be the crowning jewel. If you collect Mustangs, this one will demand to be in the front row of your collection. For those who don’t normally collect Muscle Cars, take the plunge. It’s an amazing piece of diecast art. I wouldn’t hesitate. GMP has almost sold out.
