DM T&C/New Yorker
Swap Top |

Many visitors to JSS asked
if the top from the '48 Chrysler New Yorker could be placed on the '48
Chrysler Town & Country convertible? I will tell you right here and
now that it can be done, and we will tell you how to do it. |

First off, the convertible boot on the T&C
is glued in place with strong CA type cement, (like super glue). You
can get the boot off, but there is a chance that it can "rip",
since it is made of PVC. (PATIENCE!!) Once it is off, there will be some
glue residue on the "wood" surface. Note that the wood color
is painted and thinners or "glue removers" can damage this finish.
The only way to remove it is to gently scrape it off of the car with a
blade...risky and not for anyone who is not comfortable performing their
own modeling work. (Remember, you can always just put the boot back on
to cover it up). |

The roof from the New Yorker has two mounting
tabs and a raised ridge that hangs below the edge of the fabric (see image
below). This has to be removed, since the T&C does not have the same
upper body as the New Yorker. Our modeler used a razor saw and then a Dremel
tool to smooth the bottom edge...again risky, since you don't want to damage
the fabric covering. (Cover the fabric with some masking tape first). |

The top does fit the contour of the T&C
quite well. Position the top so that it fits the top of the windshield
frame and it will just cover the trunk hinge notches in the rear deck.
Unfortunately, there are now no mounting tabs, so the top will be loose
on the model. It can be done, but if you are not experienced using these
tools, we would recommend sending your model to one of the accomplished
builders who frequent these boards. |

Above all, a clean and organized work area is paramount!
LOL, enjoy! |
