The year was 1969; I remember it well, carefree and young, with big dreams of travel. What better way to travel but in a monster wagon, such as the Chevrolet Kingswood Estate wagon. This automobile was huge, you could live in it, if you like, and it was the ideal automobile for a road trip with family and friends. All kidding aside these wagons were gorgeous both inside and out. And in the day the woodgrain look was all the rage too.
In 1969 Chevrolet reintroduced the Kingswood Estate Wagon, based on the Caprice line, it sported the highest trim line available, quite a looker if you ask me. The woodgrain trim and chrome really set if off, as far as eye appeal went, couple that with its tinted glass, roof-rack and dual-action tailgate, you had the making of a beautiful wagon. This was a wagon, the likes of my father, drooled over, rightly so.
Also, the Kingswood came equipped with power steering, vacuum power brakes and woodgrain trim throughout the interior. And let us NOT forget the 427ci Turbo Jet engine. My pop would have thought he died and went to heaven tooling down the Jersey Turnpike without a care in the world. Oh, let’s not forget all the seating available in this wagon too. You never lived until you sat backwards in a car heading down the highway at warp speed either. My father loved his wagons, he never owned this one, but he lusted after it like many men did, in 1969, but unfortunately, it was never parked in our garage.
So now you understand my excitement when the Automodello models arrived for my review, it was the memories that I shared with my father, over the love of his wagons, which really made take notice of this model. Pop and I made numerous trips to the "Chevy Dealer", in 1969, sharing his dream, of one day owning, the "Chevrolet Kingswood Estate Wagon", however, I knew Mom was not one for spending money and my father would never spend the money without my mother's approval. So therefore my father’s dream/fantasy would never come to pass. I wish he would have bought the wagon and lived his dream, he never did. But just like an old girlfriend she lived rent free in my father's head for the rest of his life. Many a day, over a few drinks, he would mention the old girl, his '69 Kingswood Estate, which he never got to know, but still held a place for her in his heart. I always teased him over this wagon, it was the one automobile he truly lusted over the remainder of his life.
Automodello put a big smile on my face, when I opened the boxes for the first time; I was expecting to view such a gorgeous replica, it allowed me to relivie the time I spent with my father and the wagon that he loved so much. I have to tell you the Automodello Kingswood Estate Wagon is drop dead gorgeous, paint is flawless, trim is applied perfectly, and attention to detail is remarkably accurate. My only complaint, if you want to call it that, was I wanted more. Because this model brought so many memories flooding back to me, I wanted to open the doors and explore the interior, pop the hood to view the engine, crawl in the back and sit in the seat. Admire the dash as that young man once did. To say I was impressed with this wagon would be an understatement; the Automodello team nailed it. In my opinion this is the best model yet, in the impressive line of Automodello Models. This one is special!
If you want a replica of the 60's, to compliment your collection, you won't go wrong with the "Automodello 1969 Kingswood Estate Wagon"; she sure is special, my pop now has one, I am sure he is smiling from ear to ear as his picture sits next to the model for him to enjoy the automobile which he loved so much. Enjoy the ride dad! And thank you Jim for the memories of a time not so long ago.
