“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”
-William Shakespeare

when I pull the bikes off the road, put the trainer tires on and brought them in the basement, on trainers; it's now winter.
Not as much fun as riding the trails with my beautiful wife but just as relaxing riding indoors along side her watching some tv shows we missed earlier during the summer months. I am not a television person; I prefer being outside with my family and of course my dog Maddy.
Little Maddy is now 13 years old. Where the hell did that time go? I thought we were going to lose her earlier this year as she suffered from horrible allergies. One of the vets that I do computer work for wanted to put her down. Was he nuts or what? I said no... I tried all kinds of pills, shampoo's, shots all to no avail, her health was failing fast. She lost most of her hair, was excreting a dark brown waxy substance through her skin and she had a horrible odor. I resigned my fact that she was dying. Then on a lark I found a chew made by Petscy at this point I already spent a ton of money on her and thought what the hell is another $30. To my surprise this stuff worked; the pictures of the dogs on their web site resembled Maddy. They called what she was suffering from the "Silent Killer" and it was. The only reason I am posting this is if you have a pet and it is itching itself to death, try this stuff it works.
Cathy and I are both dog lovers. We had one, Casey, whom we dearly loved until he died at age 7. He was having convulsions and there was no choice but to put him down. It was pretty traumatic for both of us. We spent $$$$ on him to keep him alive for us and for no other reason. Now Cathy wants another one and I'm saying no.
Yesterday my son told us that they had to have the teeth pulled for both of their dogs, both of which are over 10 years old. It cost them over $4,000.00.
I have seen dog owners who should be imprisioned for the way they treat their pets. When questioned about how they could put them in the back of an open pickup truck and drive an hour and a half in below freezing weather thru northern Arizona their answer was "Hey, they are dogs, not humans." Conversely, when I see people walking their dogs on the sidewalk in 110 degree weather I cringe and feel sorry for the poor animals who lift their legs abnormally to avoid the heat and feel like smacking the owners silly for their ignorance.
Owning a dog entails making a financial, moral and a time commitment. We are now on a fixed income that doesn't afford the luxury of treating a pet like a member of the family. Sad.

We lost Molly, our fantastic black and white cocker, March 25, 2020. She had a cough, but otherwise seemed fine, still playful and liked to watch Sesame Street on TV. She was super smart and loving. She was only 11, but the cough was being caused by a tumor on her lung. She went through a four surgery, but it was so well hidden they couldn't get it all. After two days on a ventilator, she just couldn't breathe on her own and finally gave up. We got to say goodbye moments after she died. We cried for two weeks, and still miss her to this day. We have another buff cocker, Gracie, who was six at the time. You could feel her sadness too. A month later we got a new pup, a white and black cocker, Lexi, and we swear Molly is in there sometimes. I can't imagine not having a dog. We are 75, on a fixed income too, but I don't trgret Molly's $15,000 surgery one bit.

Our Ceasar a German Shepard is close to 13 and dealing with ageing issues! Shows no sign of pain so we are loving every minute we still are given! Vet gave us bad news 2 months ago that he has multiple tumors. She acted like he living on borrowed time but at times still acts like a puppy!
