Each month I struggle over which model to review in the JSS e-Newsletter. Why? There are so many great replicas to choose from, making the decision rather difficult. The Danbury Mint 1960 Chevrolet Impala was always one of my favorites, worthy of a recommendation as a car to be added to any collection, if you don't already own it?
Since the late 50's into the early 60's fins were all the rage. The Impala didn't sport the infamous big fin designs of the fifties Cadillac's or some of the other manufactures of it's time, however.
The 60 Impala utilized a more streamlined aerodynamic fin design, thus setting it apart from the competition. The new design defined the direction of the Chevrolet Impala and the start of the muscle car era too. As evident from the image above Danbury Mint captured the aerodynamic design perfectly
The detail on the '60 Impala goes way beyond your average Diecast. The engine compartment is fully plumbed in outstanding detail. Battery with cables, lineage cables, fantastic hood hinges just like the ones found on the original car and even hood insulation. One thing missing are decals denoting warnings and engine information. It would have been nice to add these small touches if available, sometimes licensing prevents these subtle additions however.
As for the interior, it borders on perfection. The gauges are readable and realistic, the front seats fold forward with the correct color and material design. This model came equipped with air-conditioning so the unit is mounted on the floor as they originally were on the 1:1. It doesn't get any better than this when it comes to a replicas interior.
Viewing the trunk you notice a period correct trunk mat with spare tire including the lug wrench. Again the hinges are very well done. The more you explore this replica the more you will love it. Flipping it over to view the undercarriage you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail put forth in its creation. The undercarriage sports dual exhaust, frame rails and transmission lines. The stance of the model is excellent and the color combination is perfect. All I can say if you love the early Impala's make this one of your choices you won't be sorry for doing so. This is a 5 star model by any stretch of the imagination.
