The Cadillac Allante was the car that General Motors was going to use to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and their SL series along with the Jaguar XJS. In order to do that Cadillac teamed up with Italian-based coach builder Pininfarina. Pininfarina was to build the bodies of the Allante, paint them, trim them and install their convertible tops. Once completed the cars were shipped to Detroit where the final assembly would be completed.
However beautiful the car was it was plagued with water leaks which GM was aware of and decided to push it out regardless, thus tarnishing the Allante name from the get go. As GM kept improving the Allante year over year it was unable to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. Add to that it had very low sales numbers which in turn lead to its death in the GM lineup.
My Father fell in love with this car from the minute he laid eyes on it. You could say he lusted over it, every time I was with him this car consumed the conversation as it played on his mind, like that old girlfriend that gave him his first kiss. I found it enjoyable, watching my father have a passion for something again, this car became the forbidden fruit and he was ready to take a bite. I called my friend that owned the local Cadillac franchise, he delivered one to my father's house and told him to drive it for a week or more to see how he likes it. My father was like a love sick kid; when he slid behind the wheel and she wrapped her arms around him he was hooked.
However, all good things must end, as my mother ruled the roost and this ‘New love wasn't coming to her house. Thus my father succumbed to my mother’s wishes and another love was to be forgotten. I felt my father's pain but I knew my mother's word was final, no 'New car. Dad resented the fact that he was denied ownership of this car until the day he died. And to be clear he could clearly afford this automobile but rather create a war with my mother he thought it best just to succumb to her wishes rather than dealing with the aftermath of what would come later. Pop was a wise man and knew my mother like a book. My heart broke for my father; I knew this was his dream automobile which was never meant to be. Mom won again!
But I digress; the Automodello Allante captures the car of my father's dream to a T. I have to tell you when I opened the first box I was transported back in time to the day the car was delivered to my parents' house and he and I were sitting in it in his driveway with a smile on his face like a five year old at Christmas time. The fit and finish on these models is outstanding, I especially like the way the roofs go on and fit perfectly. Viewing the hardtop you will notice it includes grab handles and the tail lights include the Allante Script along with the Cadillac logo in high mount center light. This model lacks nothing in the detailing area; if it was on the 1:1 you will find it on this model.
The interior of these models is a whole other story. I love to see a detailed dash and the Automodello fits that bill nicely. I thought I was sitting in my father's driveway again; admiring the interior of this beautiful car again. In my humble opinion Automodello hit this one out of the park. Yes, I know these models aren't for everyone. I get it, but I got to tell you if you remember these automobiles then you need to include one of these in your collection; you won't regret the purchase; I promise you that.
