Let me start off by saying I was not a Motorhome guy. Life was busy in 1973; there was just no time to tool around the country in a beautiful motorhome, being all I could be. However, later on in life many of our friends owned motorhomes and enjoyed life to the fullest. Me, I was more of a tent guy, along with our two kids, and the little we camped they loved it. But I digress and like I always said "If it flipped your switch, go for it". My grandson calls me a "Delicate flower", and he is correct, I would have been more at ease camping in a motorhome than a tent. Allow me to explore the GMX Motorhome along with the Automodello rendition of it with you.
The truck and coach division of GMC decided to stick its toe in the Motorhome water between 1973 - 1978 building a complete motorhome at their Pontiac, Michigan plant. These vehicles were manufactured in 23 and 26 ft. lengths, and sported front wheel drive. Believe it or not, GMC designed, engineered, and built the entire vehicle, including the interiors, completely in house. Also, this plant supplied empty shells to other RV manufacturers which became custom vehicles, to customer’s specks. Also, there were bare vehicles supplied to specialty manufacturers to be manufactured into mail delivery, mobile training vehicles and emergency vehicles too.
A total of 12,921 Motorhomes were produced through 1973 - 1978. The interior of the GMC motorhome was built at the Gemini Corp. plant in Mt. Clemens, Michigan from 1973 to 1974 before being brought in house for the remainder of the run. It is estimated that there are 3,000 to 4,000 of the original production still in running condition today. Now that is amazing.
Think about all the possibilities that lie ahead for Automodello line if they choose to take the GMC Motorhome further down the road. We could be looking at many rendetions of this replica which would really give a massive selection of models. Automodello does currently offer one as custom model, belonging to a race team.
The Automodello replica is pretty impressive right out of the box, it scaled well and sometimes that isn't an easy task to accomplish. You know what I mean? A model just looks off, no matter how you present it. I found the Automodello Motorhome to present very well, delivering perfect fit and finish. Viewing the interior was a treat too; the interior is highly detailed and visible through the many windows on this replica. Although this model sports a lot of exterior parts, such as the awnings, roof rack, rear ladder etc. I found nothing to be delicate, to the touch, and feared breaking something as I fondled the replica. I really enjoyed exploring the model and even though I was not a camper guy, I found the model to be worthy of a place on the shelf; it is pretty cool.
Bottom line, I really enjoy the Automodello GMC Motorhome in my collection. The Automodello replica is a fully licensed piece from GMC, so you know its detail is correct. And knowing the designers behind this replica, I will assure you it is done 100% to their high standards too.
I would like to add the packaging on the last three models we received had a bubble-wrap sleeve protecting the contents of the model which I thought was both interesting and going the extra mile to assure your model arrives without damage.
Nice job Automodello, another beautiful piece I am proud to display.
Thank You!
