The Phantom Corsair was a prototype automobile built in 1938; it was a six-passenger coupe. Designed by Rust Heinz, of the H.J. Heinz family; it was a dream of his to design a futuristic car such as the Corsair. Although dismissed as a failure; it never entered production.
The Corsair was regarded as an automobile ahead of its time; its design — simply put — was over the top. Or was it?
Automodello is a mint that recreates those very rare automobiles; therefore it was only natural that the 1938 Phantom would be on its "Bucket List" of replicas to produce. And if you are wondering what is the quality of the model you will receive from Automodello let me assure you that this mint ONLY produces museum quality replicas. From the packaging the model arrived in, to the model itself, viewing it for the first time you know you purchased a high-end replica done right.
The Automodello Phantom is attached to its base by two screws; we removed the model from its base for photos. I would recommend keeping it on the base and I would even recommend the purchase of a cover to entomb and protect it from damage.
To say this model impressed me would be an understatement. I found the paint to be glass like and applied flawlessly. The roof panel was a perfect fit and easily installed. Be mindful of the photo-etched wipers; they can be damaged very easily if you aren't careful. But just to be clear I had no issues with mine.
In my opinion the Corsair is one of those models that if you appreciate the Classic automobiles often featured in Hemmings Classic Car Magazine then this one is for you. The Automodello replica is limited to 300 units worldwide, which means this one will be sought out — as one of those rare classics — for years to come.
Having posted our first photos, on JSS, I was immediately inundated with questions about the build quality and detail of the model. And I answered them all honestly when I said; "It is simply stunning from the ground up".
Everything, and I do mean everything, about this replica is high-end, with unprecedented attention to detail. Fit, finish, scribe lines and chrome were all perfect. There wasn't a finger print anywhere on the replica when I unpacked it; it was polished to perfection.
And if you follow my reviews you know I love a detailed instrument panel, and all I'll say about this one is "Thank You" Raffi; you nailed it.
JSS has called them right in the past and I will go out on a limb and say this one will be a secondary market hit once the run is sold out. Order it today; you won't be disappointed; I wasn't. (Five Corks)
