One of the toughest models I ever had to review is the ’57 Eldorado, which I will discuss as we proceed. First, let me explain what is considered upon reviewing a model at JSS Software. Naturally, fit and finish is very important, color, is it period correct, detail, how much detail was devoted to the model and finally price. That said, upon final inspection we assign a ranking of one to five stars on each model reviewed. One being the worst five being the best based on all the criteria mentioned above. Our reviews are an honest impression of the model as we receive it right out of the box. Now that I cleared up how we review these models let me begin.
The ’57 Cadillac Eldorado by Franklin Mint is a "New" release of a previous Franklin Mint replica, which was originally Ebony in color with a Stainless Steel roof. The "New" release is Turquoise in color and limited to approximately 2500 pieces worldwide. Most collectors call these re-paints. In most cases when a mint releases one of these repaints they may repair or update the original mold. In some cases giving the collector a better quality model than the original.
As for the "New" ’57 Eldorado most collectors either love it or hate it, I will straddle the fence. I was sent a "New" model and will review it as received here. Upon opening the box I was stuck by the beautiful Turquoise color; which I must admit is stunning. Starting at the front of the model, and rotating it slowing in a clockwise position I was very disappointed in the chrome trim. On both front fenders it looked like a hacksaw blade. The chrome was not cleaned properly leaving rough edges on it, which can be attributed to being knocked out of the mold and not being cleaned correctly. The left rear panel had the same hacksaw appearance, which distracted from the overall appearance of the model. The chrome louvers located on the top of both front fenders were poorly cleaned also; they both had the appearance that pieces in the louvers were missing, too. All the remaining chrome looked good with nothing missing or broken. The fit of the doors, hood and trunk was excellent.
Looking at the model from a side stance the nose seems to sit too high. Not being familiar with the 1:1 I don’t know what the proper stance of this automobile should be? I personally don’t care for the stance of this replica; it should be lower in my opinion if for nothing else eye appeal. Now onto the top, which on the original car was Stainless Steel I assume on the replica it is a fitted brushed aluminum? The top on my model does not fit properly causing a buckle near the left rear window, very noticeable. For the price that this model commands this should not have been an issue, quality control should have flagged this model.
Having inspected the exterior, lets peek under the hood and see what we got in there. Wow, best describes the detail put forth in engine detail, really impressive. The detail in the engine compartment is outstanding hoses; pumps, belts and decals are all crammed into the engine compartment giving a very realistic appearance.
Reviewing the interior I admit it too is stunning, having readable gauges, even a front armrest that folds down. I love the color combination of the seats, which are white leather with turquoise outer trim; the door rocker panel chrome sports the Fleetwood branding on it, a very nice touch.
Upon opening the trunk you will notice the Limited Edition plate denoting the number of the replica, a spare tire with leather like cover and a padded trunk lid.
Flipping the model over you can’t help but notice the exhaust pipes, which utilized the flexible pipe off the headers. Other than that the rest of the undercarriage is hohum.
Now, where I take issue on this replica, is first, the price $155.00 seems rather exuberant for a repainted model. If I am going to purchase any model for $155 I would like to see photoetched wipers along with photo etched emblems on the model rather than decals and big plastic wipers. Also, I would like to see the fit and finish of the chrome to be much cleaner and a roof that fits properly. For those reasons I give this replica two and a half stars. If this was a $105 model or less I could see a possible four stars on it but based on what I received I cannot justify a higher ranking on this model.
