Some were abandoned along Route 66, some were likely Depression era migration vehicles that didn't reach their destination, or work trucks that just finished their last job and were retired, whatever.
I've always been fascinated by junk vehicles. Even had a few on my own back lot for many years (all cleaned out now!).
