The Chevrolet Celebration is back... after a brief absence I'll continue with posts that celebrate the full-size Chevrolet models offered by FM/DM.
Today we take a look at the '58 Impala. For 1958 General Motors was promoting their 50th year of production. Each division offered special models to commemorate the occasion. In the Chevrolet Division, their special model was the Bel Air Impala. It was offered in a hardtop sport coupe and a convertible. The new Chevrolet, as well as the Pontiac Division introduced cars that were lower and wider than the previous model year. These cars were in quick response & GMs 1st to the "Forward Look" cars from all of the divisions in the Chrysler Corporation's lineup. As beautiful as these designs were for both the Chevrolet & Pontiac, they were one-year only models. In 1959, GM fully answered the modern look started by Chrysler, and with an all-new design for the Impala as well as all of their divisions.
For the model, the Danbury Mint issued its 1st one in 1993. Several more examples followed, with the last one being issued in 2008. Today's post highlights that 1st release. A convertible finished in Tropic Turquoise. As I looked in my photo files, it seems that I have only taken this set of photos, so it is definitely overdue for a reshoot.
I know this is the old technology; but, DM nailed 'the look' on ALL their '58s. And if you want a 'connie' - this is how to do it- no 'diving platform'... jus the extension for the wheel / tire.
