This was probably Oldsmobile's last hurrah. I think the Supreme was the 3rd highest selling model in the US for 1976 model year, behind the Impala and LTD. It fell off down the sales list when downsizing started to accelerate across the industry.
I was fortunate enough to get to go on an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) trip to Lansing to see the Cutlass and Toronado assembly lines that year. Lansing was an old facility, still using 2 floors to build the cars. The bodies were built upstairs, and dropped through an opening in the floor/ceiling to mate up with the rolling chassis on the lower floor.
The body color ALWAYS matched the wheels, I thought that was so amazing, that they didn't wait to install wheels until the body and chassis were mated.
Ahh, memories. I had a '77 model which was essentially the same car, root beer brown and tan, she was a looker, drove and rode nicely as well. Thanks Bill.
